RAW: Addressing real life issues in the workplace - A panel discussion

The workplace is somewhere a lot of people spend most of their time in, and in that aspect it is essential to think about what can be done from a managerial perspective in order to be more proactive when supporting staff. A panel of speakers at The Great British Workplace Wellbieng Series offer their expertise and solutions to addressing, and adapting to real life issues that make their way into the workplace.

Emily Hall, Rapid Transformational Hypnotherapist & Coach at Fresh Forward, explains the human desire and need for connection. “It is beneficial to really understand your team and who they are. Find the best working practice for people and their situations, and figure out solutions that will suit each individual.” 

One issue that is especially important to understand in the workplace is addiction. If someone in the workforce is suffering with addiction they are likely to only confide in someone they trust and have a strong connection with, highlighting the importance of creating an environment where employees can trust their employer with personal things. 

Paul Dorrington, NHS Lead, discusses the importance of trusting your manager so that you can confide in them about potential struggles and addictions. “It is very important for someone to first tell their story as this opens up a lot more potential for others to do the same. It is all about the first person to do so, as this will open up a gateway for others to speak freely about any issues they have”. 

Sandra Parker, Founder at Just the Tonic Coaching, an expert in helping adult who struggle with alcoholism, suggests that if a person in a senior role can be really honest about a situation then it can help to take the shame away from other employees, potentially encouraging them to come forward.

As well as being open with your staff and being open to them talking to you about issues. It is just as crucial to be able to identify when someone may be struggling with real life issues. When people are stressed, it is important that you know which signs to look out for, as it is quite unlikely symptoms of addiction will be recognisable in the majority of people. Developing real relationships in the workplace is needed as that is one of the main ways in which people will begin to speak out.
